The most valuable thing prediabetes gives you
Prediabetes is a warning sign. It's also a gift of something most health conditions don't offer: time.
Time to improve how you eat. Time to build strength and fitness. Time to sleep better and manage stress. And, when needed, time to start treatment before complications develop.
Here's why using that time matters so much.
Diabetes is common, and often hidden
According to the CDC, more than 40 million Americans have diabetes, and more than 1 in 4 adults with diabetes don't know it. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Here in Shelby County, about 14 percent of adults have diabetes.
Because type 2 diabetes usually develops slowly, damage can begin long before a diagnosis.
What high blood sugar does over time
Think of blood sugar that stays high like sand in your car's engine. You may not notice it at first, but over time it wears down the parts that keep everything running. Blood sugar that stays high gradually damages blood vessels, nerves, and organs.
According to the CDC:
- People with diabetes have twice the risk of heart disease.
- About 1 in 3 adults with diabetes may have chronic kidney disease.
- Diabetes is the No. 1 cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and adult blindness.
Diabetes can also cause nerve damage, with numbness, tingling, and pain in the feet and legs, and it's closely tied to fatty liver disease.
These outcomes are serious. But they are not inevitable, and that's the point.
Prevention works
In the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program study, adults with prediabetes who made lasting lifestyle changes, including healthier eating, regular activity, and modest weight loss, lowered their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.
Even a 5 to 10 percent reduction in body weight can make a meaningful difference, especially when it comes from fat rather than muscle.
Why waiting costs more
The old approach was to wait until blood sugar was high enough to need treatment. By then, insulin resistance may have been building for 5 to 10 years.
Prevention flips that. Instead of waiting for a diagnosis, you:
- Find out your risk early
- Measure what's really happening, including blood sugar, belly fat, and muscle
- Find the factors driving it, from inactivity to poor sleep to stress
- Make changes while your body still responds well to them
It's like maintaining your car instead of waiting for a breakdown on the side of I-240. Regular upkeep costs less, and you stay on the road longer.
Prevention is about more than blood sugar
The same habits that lower diabetes risk also protect your heart, liver, joints, and mind. Building muscle helps you stay strong and independent as you age. Better sleep and less stress improve how you feel every day. Prevention isn't a list of things to give up. It's an investment in the life you want to keep living.
Start where you are
You don't need a perfect plan to begin. You need a first step.
- Take the CDC's one-minute Prediabetes Risk Test.
- If your score is high, ask your doctor about an A1C or fasting blood sugar test.
- Pick one habit to start this week, like a 10-minute walk after dinner.
